CHAPTER 20
âHow close you think they are?â I asked as the minutes dragged along. Or probably more like seconds. It just seemed to take forever whenever my life was almost literally in someone elseâs hands.
âSomeoneâs still up here,â Lee replied. âI can hear âem moving around.â
âI thought so. Iâve got the wrench ready.â
âI kinda thought you had, soâ¦whatâs that hard thing on your side?â
Even though it had to be the wrench, I said, âMy hip.â
âOkay, smartass.â
âBetter than a dumbass.â
âSeriously. I felt something hard. Like metal.â
âOh, that has to be my belt,â I said, seeing if heâd remember what I had been wearing. âIt has these cool metal studs on there.â
âWhat? Really? You wear a belt with metal studs. What are youâ¦like some kind of metalhead?â
âI just thought it was pretty.â
âFor a bulldog.â
âItâs not like spikes and chains and shit.â I chuckled at the way I defended my fake fashion sense, or lack thereof. âProbably a shame though.â
âThat could definitely come in handy, if you were actually wearing that.â
âSo you do remember?â
âI pay attention to things,â Lee replied. âThatâs what cops do.â
âGood point.â I sighed. âShame I didnât have a belt. That couldâve been a good weapon.â
âProbably better than the wrench.â
âNot as easy to take off, though. Right?â I rambled.
It was his turn to chuckle. âYouâre, uh, asking the wrong person that question.â
âDuh. I should have expected that kind of answer out of you.â
âMaybe, but letâs be serious for a second.â
I thought about answering back with another snide comment, but it was clearly not the time. Iâd also started to pick up on the sound of boots on the metal gridding. Granted it was a large area, but the volume had seemed to grow exponentially. Whether that meant more people or someone getting closer, I couldnât quite tell at first.
The longer I listened, the better sense I got that there was only a single person. The quiet gaps between each step were too uniform.
Then suddenly the pace quickened.
âFellaâs picking up speed,â Lee whispered. âThat could be good or really bad.â
âIf theyâre in a hurry, they might miss us,â I deduced.
The way the sound grew dimmer then louder gave me a slightly better idea what was going on.
âTheyâre going down the rows, probably looking in all the fermenters to see if weâre hiding in there.â
âOnly an idiot would hide there,â Lee said brusquely, insulting me as much with his tone as with the incrimination. I had considered hiding in one, though I knew I hadnât really been that serious about it.
But still, Iâd considered it.
âHow stupid,â I muttered at myself.
âYeah they are. Weâre gonna be fine,â Lee declared. âGetting away was the best thing we could do.â
I didnât think he could tell, but I nodded in agreement.
âNow that the alarmâs pulled, everyone knows something is up,â Lee continued. âThey might not even make off with any of the bottles from the safe.â
âMakes me wonder about the others, though.â
âHold that thought.â Lee finally let go of my shoulders.
Footsteps grew their loudest yet.
Leeâs hand wrapped around my wrist, brushing against the wrench in the process.
